Step 2 — Sandakan to the river
Sukau: ~2–2.5 hours by sealed road (about 132km). Bilit: similar time on the same corridor. Abai: boat-access — part of its appeal. Most itineraries break the journey at Sepilok (25 minutes from the airport) for the orangutan and sun bear centres, timed for the morning feeding session. Luggage is handled to the lodge — except on Selingan Island, which has no porters.
Coming from elsewhere in Sabah
From Semporna, after Sipadan: overland Semporna → Sukau is roughly 4 hours — reef-then-river is Sabah's classic east-coast circuit. From Kota Kinabalu by road: a full-day drive; flying is the practical choice. From Danum Valley / Lahad Datu: the Kinabatangan combines naturally on a Sabah wildlife circuit — ask for a combined routing.
