The Menanggul cruise

Boats turn off the broad, tea-brown Kinabatangan into a green tunnel of overhanging forest. This is the river at its closest range: proboscis harems settling into riverside trees, kingfishers on low branches, crocodiles on the mud and — regularly — wild orangutans feeding overhead. Lodge cruises run the standard rhythm, dawn (~6:00 AM) and late afternoon (~4:00 PM), 2–2.5 hours each. If you photograph one cruise on the Kinabatangan, make it a Menanggul afternoon.
